Hebrew belongs to the Canaanite group of Semitic languages, with strong links to Phoenician and Aramaic. Modern Hebrew is not far away from ancient Hebrew. Modern Hebrew is spoken by approximately 9 million people worldwide, of which 5 million are native speakers in Israel. After Israel, United States has the second largest Hebrew speaking population, with 220,000 Hebrew speakers.
Hebrew is a consonant language. The vowel signs were added later around the seventh and eight century B.C. when the use of Hebrew as a conversational language had become less widespread and many people needed pronunciation guides.
Hebrew is written from right to left. The Hebrew alphabet consists of twenty two letters, two of which are used as vowels as well as consonants. The Hebrew vowels are indicated by dots and dashes below and above the letters. Though vowels signs are generally not used in written materials today. However they do appear in many biblical and liturgical texts.
There are no capital letters in Hebrew writing system. Printed material generally uses the square script, whereas a much more rounded cursive script is used for handwriting.
